The Steering Committee established a Public Advisory Group (PAG) in January 2006 to assist with developing a Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP) for the Defined Forest Area in the Mackenzie Forest District. To promote participation in the PAG, the Steering Committee sent letters of invitation to approximately 350 individuals and local First Nations in the Mackenzie Forest District, provided a media release, advertised in the local newspaper, distributed posters, and hosted an Open House in Mackenzie in January 2006. Between January 2006 and March 31, 2006, the PAG met on five occasions, with an average of 16 public members at each meeting, to undertake the work necessary to develop a SFMP. At the first PAG meeting in January 2006, those attending the meeting developed a Terms of Reference. The PAG membership was drawn from a wide range of sectors in the Mackenzie Forest District. Each sector then selected a representative to participate in the PAG. Alternates to the sector representatives, advisors, and observers (that is, members of the general public) were welcome at PAG meetings. After completing the Terms of Reference, the PAG began work on the SFMP?s Criteria and Indicators Matrix following the SFM Framework. To date, the PAG has completed work on three of the nine criteria and twelve of thirty-one measures and their associated targets and variances. The Steering Committee also created a Continuous Improvement Matrix to assist itself and the PAG in tracking issues that could not be addressed at the current time. The Steering Committee developed and implemented a meeting evaluation form, beginning with the January 31st, 2006 meeting. PAG members consistently rated the meeting and PAG process, facilitator, and meeting logistics at or above 80%. Over the upcoming twelve months, the PAG will continue to work on developing the SFMP for the Mackenzie Forest District. After completing the SFMP?s Criteria and Indicators Matrix (May 2006), they will meet to review a draft of the SFMP and the Predictive Modeling (September 2006). They will need to meet again over the winter to make any necessary changes to the Criteria and Indicators Matrix, and to review their Terms of Reference.
