Monitoring plan for riparian sensitive species associated with small wetlands in the Vanderhoof DFA Beaudry, Leisbet

Abstract: Canfor has obtained CSA certification of its Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFM) to the CSA Z809-02 standard for the Vanderhoof Defined Forest Area (DFA). The SFM plan has identified a need to examine riparian sensitive terrestrial or aquatic species that could be used as monitoring indicators to support SFM plan initiatives in the DFA. This project is the start of the second phase in this process. The first phase was a literature review, which identified potential indicator species and species indicators and proposed management strategies (Beaudry and Proulx 2006). The literature review identified indicators for a variety of riparian types including large and small streams, lakes and wetlands and for early seral and mid- and late-seral riparian ecosystems (Tables 1 and 2). For this phase we have developed a detailed monitoring plan and identified potential monitoring sites to monitor a subset of the literature review. The monitoring plan has been developed to monitor 4 different disturbance levels of the most commonly disturbed riparian habitat. It is designed to determine if the site level management activities proposed in the literature review are adequate to maintain the habitat of the indicator species and species indicators identified in the literature review. In subsequent years field work will be undertaken to confirm the presence of the proposed indicators and the effectiveness of the proposed management strategies (Beaudry and Proulx 2006). prepared by Leisbet Beaudry and Gilbert Proulx.
