Abstract: The purpose of this project is to research, recommend and document social and economic indicators and measures for the Fort Nelson Defined Forest Area Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP). The Fort Nelson SFMP incorporates a heirarchial plan structure of criteria, indicators, measures and targets for social, economic and ecological values. Subsequent experience in attempting to implement the chosen suite of social and economic indicators and measures demonstrated that several were unsatisfactory for the purposes of monitoring outcomes and activities associated with the Fort Nelson SFMP?s criteria. A core end goal of this project is to craft metrics that provide an accurate interpretation of progress towards sustainable forest management, which is defined through the criteria laid out in the Fort Nelson SFM Plan. There is no specific authority, such as a statute, government policy or organizational requirement, which dictates the features of SFMP indicators and measures. As well, there is neither legislated mandate for SFMPs nor government approval process for SFMPs. An important reason for the participation of Canfor and BCTS in Fort Nelson DFA SFM planning was to help fulfill requirements for securing and maintaining CAN/CSA ? Z809 certification for their Fort Nelson woodlands operations. As a consequence, expectations for socio-economic indicators under the CSA SFM Standard set minimum requirements for developing recommendations on new socioeconomic indicators for the Fort Nelson TSA SFM Plan. submitted by Crane Management Consultants.
