Abstract: Due to a number of landslides that occurred during or after a severe storm event on November 15, 2006, fish habitat in the Sproat Lake watershed was severely impacted. The unnamed tributary at Stirling Arm Mainline 7.0 km was one of the most severely impacted areas; the entire fish bearing portion of the creek, which stretches 500 m from the mouth at Sproat Lake, was buried by the landslide. The greatest impact to fish was likely the loss of sockeye beach spawning habitat surrounding the creek delta. Geotechnical assessments indicated that there was still unstable material upslope that was likely to come down in a landslide, which would be very damaging for fish habitat. An opportunity was identified to create a series of sediment storage basins and rock weirs that would trap sediment and debris and store it before it reached Sproat Lake and caused further damage to high value sockeye beach spawning habitat.
