The side channel project was funded by multiple partners, with the Nootka Sound Watershed Society as the proponent for all funding except the FIA component. The project has two construction phases. In 2008, Phase 1 construction saw the completion of a 920 m long groundwater channel with a wetted area of 7,260 m2. Chum, coho, and chinook salmon were observed using the channel in the fall. Phase 2 of the project, scheduled for 2009, will see the groundwater channel connected to a surface water channel wetted by the Conuma River Hatchery outflow. The new section of channel will be approximately 275 m long for a total project length of 1195 m. The surface water is expected to attract additional numbers of fish and introduce additional nutrients into the side channel.
