In both Woss and Vernon lakes, previous research has shown that lake-fertilization produces larger sockeye salmon smolts. Other studies have shown that larger sockeye smolts survive better in the marine environment and produce higher spawner returns. During 2008, Woss Lake was fertilized and Vernon Lake was not fertilized. Woss and Vernon results to date for BY2007 (in-lake year 2008) show that:
(1) Woss Lake juvenile nerkid (most juvenile sockeye) density and mean December body weights were the highest recorded since year 2000. Woss Lake juvenile nerkid December 2008 biomass was more than twice as high as any biomass ever recorded from Woss Lake.
(2) It seems likely that the observed results can be attributed to improved conditions in the marine environment combined with higher Woss Lake juvenile densities due to stocking from the (Gwani) hatchery and larger Woss Lake smolt weights due to lake fertilization.
(3) During the last two years, Vernon Lake trawl catches have included increasing proportions (25% in 2007 and 32% in 2008) of larger age 1-3 Kokanee. In the years before Vernon Lake fertilization (2000-03) age 1-3 Kokanee averaged 6% of the trawl catches and after the onset of fertilization (2004-08), 1-3 Kokanee averaged 15% .
(4) 2008 Vernon Lake juvenile nerkids (a mix of juvenile sockeye and Kokanee) mean December weight was slightly higher than average, but juvenile nerkid densities were the lowest recorded since 2000, and therefore Alby Systems Ltd. March 2009 2 biomass per ha was also low.

Fertilizer purchase and application is funded through the WFP/FIA program; in-lake (results) assessments are funded by the ?Namgis First Nation and are conducted by DFO contract staff.
