Patch & Seral Update Report for the Kalum Forest District Brouwer, Rick
2009

Abstract: An update and analysis of forest cover information within the Kalum Forest District was conducted to determine the seral and patch distributions for Landscape Units and Forest Development Units within the Kalum TSA, TFL 1, TFL 41, and the Nass TSA. This analysis was carried out at two points in time: at the end of 2007, and then at the end of 2012, after aging the forest cover and including projected harvesting. There are instances where seral stage imbalances exist on a proportional basis for licensees who have Forest Development Units that do not fully overlap with Landscape Units. These cases should be reviewed to address the imbalances and ensure that they do not affect other licensees. Information is provided on the seral constraints that result from the implementation of special resource management zones under the Kalum Sustainable Resource Management Plan. The data analysis shows that there is currently no room for harvesting within the Lakelse River SRM subzone 2. The Copper River and MacKay-Davies Grizzly Bear watersheds are within targets for forests that are 25-100 years old. Data for offshore undeveloped watersheds may indicate a need to re-evaluate the targets or the base data. In addition, analyses to support the implementation of objectives for seral constraints and important fisheries watersheds as identified in the Draft Nass South SRMP are also provided. Of the 11 CommunityWatersheds in the Kalum Forest District, there are four that require further examination about the state of hydrologically effective green-up Of the 34 Identified Watersheds in the Draft Nass South SRMP, there are 11 that equire further examination about the state of hydrologically effective green-up. Patch size distribution results for the Kalum Forest District as a whole are provided. His information should limit conflicts between licencees when proceeding with block development, and will inform both licencee and Ministry of Forests and Range staff when considering the potential for cumulative impacts on the forest landbase. Information is also provided for the seral stage, special resource management zones, nd patch size distribution results for licencee Forest Development Units within Landscape Units, and tables are provided for licencees to review their specific situations.
