Abstract: The unnamed tributary that drains into Hauk Creek is considered highly valuable habitat for fishes, and is utilized by coho salmon (MOE, 2009). McLure Lake is an area used for fishing and recreation that is accessed via TR2. Hauk Creek is a tributary of the Gordon River. The Gordon River runs approximately 50 km south, between Cowichan Lake and Port of San Juan on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The Gordon River has a history of use by Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), coho (O. kisutch) and chum salmon (O. keta) as well as rainbow (and steelhead) (O. mykiss) and coastal cutthroat trout (O. clarki) species (MOE, 2009). The previous 800 mm culvert (assessed in January 2009) was deemed a fish passage barrier in the S3-classified channel (Robert et al., 2009). Funding from the Forest Investment Account (FIA), administered through BC Timber Sales, was provided to upgrade the crossing. StoneCroft Engineering designed, prescribed and supervised the installation of the replacement culvert (2400 mm x 12,000 mm CMP with two baffles, set at 1.5%). M. C. Wright & Associates and Kevin Hunter Forestry Consulting provided environmental and construction monitoring for works conducted by Star Contracting Co. Ltd. in September 2009. The culvert replacement project was intended to create year-round access to fish habitat above the crossing and to extend the natural stream bed into the culvert by backfilling the CMP to about 1m with gravel of approved size for pawning and rearing use by fishes. In order to ensure the new culvert functions as intended, the channel transition into and out of the culvert was reestablished and reconnected into Hauk Creek.
