In both Woss and Vernon lakes, previous research has shown that lakefertilization produces larger sockeye salmon smolts. Other studies have shown that larger sockeye smolts survive better in the marine environment and produce higher spawner returns. During 2009, Woss Lake was fertilized and Vernon Lake was not fertilized.
