This field guide presents site classification and identification information for ecosystems of the Boundary--Eastern Okanagan--Shuswap--Southern Arrow areas in south-central and southeastern British Columbia. It provides an entirely new forest and non-forest site classification for the following existing and newly mapped biogeoclimatic subzones/variants: IDFxx1, IDFdh, IDFdm1, MSdm1, ICHxw1, ICHmk1. It also provides updated and final descriptions for the following biogeoclimatic subzones/variants that were included in the Temporary Supplement to LMH 70: ICHdw4, ICHmw5, ESSFmh, ESSFdc1, ESSFdcw. This field guide replaces Land Management Handbook 20 (Braumandl and Curran 1992) and its supplement (Braumandl and Dykstra 2005), Land Management Handbook 23 (Lloyd et al. 1990), and the Temporary Supplement to Land Management Handbook 70 (MacKillop and Ehman 2016) for all geographic areas covered by the new field guide. This field guide is being released with a new provincial biogeoclimatic ecosystem map for British Columbia (BEC version 12). Changes to mapping cover the areas described in the field guide and apply to the Selkirk Resource District in the Kootenay-Boundary Region and the Okanagan-Shuswap Resource District in the Thompson-Okanagan Region. The new classifications and mapping provide important baseline ecological conditions for natural resource conservation and management, including forestry, the environmental assessment process, and assessing potential effects of climate change and the cumulative effects of management activities.
