Abstract: In the past, the protection of fish habitat in British Columbia was based on a limited number of species of special recreational or commercial value, and the requirements of native "non-game" species were ignored. Recently, however, a growing public concern with conservation and the maintenance of biodiversity has sparked an interest in our native fish fauna. Reasons for the conservation of native floras and faunas include aesthetic, ethical, scientific and economic arguments, but for the general public the most compelling argument is anthropomorphic ecosystems that maintain their biodiversity are healthy places for humans. This report documents the nature and distribution of the native fish assemblages in B.C. and summarizes what is known about the habitat requirements of non-game species. The information is then used to examine strategies for the management and conservation of these species. The freshwater fish fauna of B.C. is unique.
