Emigrant steelhead parr and smolts were enumerated at the Quinsam River counting fence by the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans from 1976 to 1984. Total emigration during each of these years was calculated by mark/recapture. Age, length and weight data were collected from subsamples. Estimated mean numbers of steelhead parr and smolts emigrating from the Quinsam River were 14,446 and 6975, respectively during the years of trapping. Smolt ages 2 and 3 comprised the majority of the sample, and age 2 was numerically dominant. Estimated smolt numbers were compared with the yield predicted by the Ministry's production model developed for Keogh River. This model overestimated Quinsam River smolt production by approximately 75%. Smolt yield resulting from outplanting above impassable barriers was slightly over 2% and represented minimal steelhead production. Factors which affected estimated parr and smolt production, and management implications are discussed.
