Abstract: Managers and biologists have recognised the need for systematic approaches to conserve rare species and habitats. Geographic Information Systems provide a tool that can be used to identify priority areas for conservation using geographically referenced data. A software program, called C-Plan, has recently been produced to identify conservation areas in landscapes that are subject to the effects of human development. Conservation areas are selected using complementarity, which is an approach that identifies the minimum or near minimum amount of area required to meet a conservation goal. C-Plan provides a tool for prioritizing conservation areas by calculating the irreplaceability of user-defined sites. Irreplaceability is a measure of the conservation importance of a site based on the species richness and rarity of the site and the vulnerability of the site to harmful impacts. The selection process inherent in C-Plan is efficient and repeatable, and can be used for predicting the outcome of different policy an
