Data obtained during 1998 from a fish counting fence on the Keogh River on northern Vancouver Island were added to over two decades of records on adult steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and salmonid smolt enumeration and sampling at the site. Wild adult steelhead have declined in abundance to record low levels of only 30 fish (<1 spawner/km). Most steelhead returned in February based on electronic enumeration and angler catch-per-unit-effort. Stray hatchery spawners (33) numerically dominated the system. Wild steelhead smolt yield also dropped dramatically to <1000 fish or <13% of the estimated productive capacity for the previous decades (1980s). Steelhead smolts were average in size, and time of peak abundance was normal (May 25). Coho salmon (O. kisutch) smolts, however, were later than normal by almost a week and considerably lower in abundance (one third of the 20-yr average and lowest on record); only 22,193 smolts emigrated. Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) were likewise in dramatic decline; only 12
