Abstract: While there is increasing interest in incorporating levels, patterns and changes of genetic variation into conservation efforts, fundamental problems persist regarding how to place genetic data in a meaningful context. Other populations or species are commonly used as reference groups, but these may be severely impacted, occupy vastly different environments or have distinct evolutionary histories. When available, the use of museum specimens offers a unique opportunity to circumvent these dilemmas. Genetic data from historic populations can discern if, how much, and at what rate genetic variation has been lost - knowledge that can be invaluable in assessing variability risks and deciding if actively facilitating gene flow is necessary. Brown bears, Ursus arctos, in the Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide Ecosystems populations have sustained varying degrees of demographic contraction and isolation in the last 2 centuries, and current levels of heterozygosity are significantly lower than...
