We developed an approach for identifying the key elements necessary for conservation of bull rout in British Columbia. Reliable information on bull trout distribution, ecology and current risk factors is required in conjunction with a full understanding of the current utility of existing management and legislative options for protection of the species. Distribution models for bull trout are currently being developed using historical fish survey records within provincial and university datasets and GIS macrohabitat attributes linked to the 1:50,000 BC Watershed Atlas. These models will eventually be refined through incorporation of more spatially precise bull trout survey data from the provincial FDIS inventory system and macrohabitat GIS attributes from the 1:20,000 TRIM Watershed Atlas. Integrating and expanding basic knowledge of bull trout ecology has been a focus of recent research activities by members of the BC Fisheries Research Branch and BC Environment regional biologists. Additionally, progress is b
