Despite the abundance of information on reproduction and nutrition of black-tailed (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), there are few data on the extent of recurring estrus in unbred females and their pattern of food intake during the mating season. In this note, we document behavioural signs of estrus, the number of recurrent estrous periods in a potential mating season, the length of individual estrous cycles, and the daily food intake of captive female black-tailed deer (O.h. columbianus) during their mating season.
