Experimental Evaluation of Three Fishways in Providing Passage for Small Kokanee Salmon Tredger, Dave

Abstract: Performance of small kokanee salmon in ascending three experimental fishway installations was evaluated during the 1976 spawning season at Meadow Creek, BC. Three different fishways were tested: the Mode "D" Alaska steep pass, the helical Model "D" Alaska steep pass, and the Aeroceanics spiral fishway. The Aeroceanics fishway effectively passed fish. Within the trial time limits, 22% of all fish tested ascended the 13 vertical foot structure while another 18% were in the process of ascending. The Model "D" Alaska steep pass as installed did not prove effective as only 26% of observed attempts were successful in negotiating 2.7 vertical feet. Similar poor performance was observed in the helical fishway with only 5.6% of observed attempts successfully passing 2.15 vertical feet. Installation problems were factors in the poor performance of the latter two fishway types.
