The Flammulated Owl (Otus flammeolus) Habitat Model for the Merritt and Kamloops forest districts was validated in these 2 British Columbia forest districts to test its ability to predict habitat variables. Comparative analysis of the model and field data indicated that the model accurately predicted leading tree species, aspect, slope, and forest age class for the Merritt Forest District alone and for both districts combined. The model tended to predict habitat suitability levels based on stand structure characteristics, grazing intensity and levels of western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis) activity observed in habitat suitability polygons in the Merritt Forest District. Predicted habitat suitability levels showed characteristics similar to distinct habitat types observed on Wheeler Mountain that are strongly suspected to indicate varying productivity levels; long-term trend data suggest moderate to high productivity is likely associated with particular forest cover and terrain features...
