The management activities necessary to enhance arboreal lichen abundance in second-growth stands are formulated into a strategy compatible with other aspects of winter range creation. The conditions that promote lichen colonization, lichen growth, and litterfall production are described. A set of key stand features that are indicators of the potential of a stand to produce lichen forage are identified. A computer model is used to relate stand development to the production of lichens and litterfall and to predict the effects of several different management scenarios on the key stand features.
