Abstract: In 1972 a full scale evaluation of several alternative port sites was conducted by representatives of the federal and provincial governments. In November 1972 the report of the evaluation Task force entitled “An Environmental Assessment of Nanaimo Port Alternatives” was released. Duke Point was identified as one of two environmentally acceptable port development alternatives providing development was oriented towards Northumberland Channel and the estuary was not disturbed.
