It’s somewhat ironic, but at a conference that is exploring
the ever-increasing number of endangered species and endangered
ecosystems in British Columbia, I’m going to tell
you that there is room for optimism. Even though we are
now experiencing the Earth’s sixth period of mass extinction—
one of the greatest extinction spasms in geological history
(Wilson 1992)—I’m going to explain why there is reason
for hope. And in a room filled with government staff and contractors,
I’m going to tell you that the primary place to look
for salvation isn’t inside government, but outside.
