Abstract: Between 1993 and 1998 a 5-year operational research study was initiated to assess flying beetle diversity associated with the management of epidemic Douglas-fir beetle populations. Beetle diversity was measured from pheromone baited and unbaited Lindgren funnel traps located in mature, beetle- attacked, leading Douglas-fir habitat. Pheromone traps were baited with known Douglas-fir beetle aggregation pheromones: MCOL (1-methylcyclohex-2-enol), and Frontalin (1,5-dimethyl-6,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]-octane). Traps were collected weekly or semimonthly through the duration of the Douglas-fir beetle flight (April/May through August/September). Results of the study identified 150 species from 40 families. Rank abundance analyses indicate log normal species distributions for both pheromone-baited and control traps. Baited trapping yielded similar species richness but significantly increased dominance indices compared to control traps...
