Blackwater strain rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) yearlings are released from British Columbia hatcheries each spring into small monoculture and coarsefish lakes. Trout raised by the different provincial hatcheries are not comparable in size at the time of release due mainly to differences in ambient temperature of the rearing water. We compared relative survival, size at age, and sexual maturation of these production fish in both monoculture and coarsefish lakes for two consecutive brood years, 1994 and 1995. Approximately equal numbers of Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery (FVTH large) and Kootenay Trout Hatchery (KTH small) trout were stocked into the study lakes for a two-way comparison. Whenever possible, in-lake comparisons included a third group, FVTH (small) that was produced for this study by controlling growth rate. Their size (8 and 16g in 1995 and 1996, respectively) was more comparable to the KTH (small) fish than the FVTH (large) fish. The fish were sampled from study lakes using gillnet gan
