The Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii) is currently on the BC Ministry of Environment, Lands and Park's Red List as a candidate for designation as Threatened or Endangered due to its very small population size and extremely localized distribution (Hooper et al. 1994). The first occurrence of the Sprague's Pipit in BC was documented in 1991 when a pair was found nesting on Bechers Prairie in the Chilcotin-Cariboo Region. During the 1992 breeding season, a pair of pipits was sighted regularly in the same general area and was believed to have been breeding. Despite extensive surveys, the Spargue's Pipit has not been recorded in the Chilcotin-Cariboo Region since 1992. The occurrence of the species in BC is most likely limited by geographic barriers such as the Rocky Mountains, which generally mark the western boundary of the species' range. Habitat protection or enhancement is not deemed necessary at this time. The Sprague's Pipit should be removed from the provincial Red List and should be given an "Indetermina
