Abstract: The Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda) is a rare and local breeding summer visitant in the Chilcotin-Cariboo Region of British Columbia (B.C.). This species is on the BC Environment Red List as a candidate for designation as Threatened or Endangered due to low population numbers and localized distribution patterns (Harper et al. 1994). Upland Sandpiper breeding habitat in the Chilcotin-Cariboo Region consists of large, open, flat grasslands with areas of tall, dense vegetation near woodland borders. Areas of more open grass within this habitat are used for feeding and loafing. Surveys conducted during the 1995 breeding season suggest that a minimum of two pairs of Upland Sandpipers currently breed at one site in the Chilcotin-Cariboo Region. The known nesting area is not officially protected. Management recommendations for this species include maintaining and creating habitat through the controlled use of livestock grazing, restricting recreational bird-watching at known nest sites, implementing educatio
