In order to manage anadramous trout or salmon populations, three basic types of information are required; the total number of fish caught; the total number escaping to spawn; and the total number of juveniles that migrate out to sea. In British Columbia we are improving our knowledge of specific steelhead trout stocks in all three of these areas, largely through the federal-provincial Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP).
Steelhead are caught in all three of the major fisheries in the province: the commercial, Indian food and river sport fisheries. Until recently stock-specific steelhead catches in these fisheries have been unknown or only roughly estimated. Through SEP we are making substantial gains in our knowledge of the steelhead catch in all types of fisheries for specific streams. It is the sport catch that will be presented here.
