Abstract: This study addressed the adequacy of current riparian management regulations along fishless headwater streams in protecting downstream fish habitat. We contrasted the effects of alternative riparian management regulations along fishless S5 or S6 headwater streams on habitat conditions in the headwater channel and in downstream fish-bearing channels. Between 1997 and 1999, we surveyed headwater reaches and downstream fish-bearing reaches in 61 small watersheds in southeastern BC. The watersheds were grouped into spatially proximate homogeneous blocks consisting of an unlogged control watershed and one or more treatment watersheds. All blocks included a "logged to the stream edge along both banks" (LTB2) riparian treatment. Some blocks also had a "logged with a riparian buffer" treatment. We measured a suite of physical variables and took continuous temperature records throughout the late summer and fall at both the headwater reach and a downstream fish-bearing reach within each watershed. We also measured a ph
