Abstract: Fish populations were sampled with electroshocking in tributaries of large rivers known to contain populations of bull trout. The two most common species captured were juvenile bull trout and rainbow trout <20 cm long. Bull trout presence or absence among sites was associated with tempearture but not with the physical characteristics of the site. Bull trout were absent from warmer streams and rainbow trout were absent from colder streams. The area of overlap spanned a temperature range of <2ºC. When bull trout were present, catch per unit effort for bull trout was positively related to LOD and boulder cover but not other physical variables such as gradient and stream width. Catch rates of bull trout and rainbow trout were negatively related. Our data suggests that temperature may play a key role in determining which of these two species is present at the between tributary scale with habitat variables determining the density within tributaries. Comparisons of the temperature differences that resulted in a shif
