Abstract: Many of the caribou herds in British Columbia were censused in 1977, and recruitment statistics were determined for 23 herds. The caribou in British Columbia are conservatively estimated to number 10,500 animals; a maximum figure would be 13,000 animals. The herds have probably declined from a high point in about 1970 when there may have been 20,000-25,000 animals. Calf recruitment varied between herds with extreme values of 2-25% calves of the total animals. The mean percentage of calves for all the herds averaged 10-11%. This calf percentage is close to the hypothesized natural mortality rate of adults. Thus there appears to be little surplus available for hunting when the province is considered as a whole. It is argued that the decline in the population from a high in 1970 resulted from low calf recruitment and overhunting. The overhunting has resulted in part from increased hunter acess to caribou ranges. The improved access in turn resulted from road building and better means of transportation. The argum
