This report and the accompanying forest zonation maps are the product of the vegetation survey of the Vancouver Island mapsheets. Together, they provide basic information about the classification, distribution, and ecolgy of the vegetation and its related properties. Fieldwork for the survey was carried out during 1973-1975. Data south of 49º N latittide was collected under the supervision of Dr. E. Oswald of the Canadian Forestry Service, Victoria; data north of the 49º N latiutde was collected by Terrestrial Studies Branch vegetaion personnel. The report is contained in three volumes. Volume 1 deals with desrciptions of the regional vegetation within the biophysical forest zonation classification. Two forest regions, four forest sections, eleven forest zones, and ten forest subzones, including both the environmental and ecological characteristics and major successional sequence found within each forest subzone are described.
