Regular inspection and maintenance of flood mitigation works is necessary to maintain the dependability of the flood mitigation system. The flood mitigation system refers to the integration of all of the components and activities that are required to ensure the long term ongoing protection of habitable areas during peak flows up to the design flood event. It includes (but not necessarily limited to) the following: the flood mitigation works (the Works); an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) manual; the legal access agreements, which are needed for the works but may also extend beyond the immediate vicinity of the works to facilitate access for the removal of sediment build-up and log debris jams; andother components implemented to ensure public safety (such as emergency operations plans and procedures, warning systems, and flood monitoring operations).
