In the present study, the chemotaxonomy of flavonoid compounds is used to differentiate between Myriophyllum spicatum and the other Myriophyllum species growing in British Columbia. Each Species of Myriophyllum shows a specific pattern of flavonoids. This makes phytochemical identification far more reliable than identification based on morphological characters and can be done at any stage of growth
