Abstract
A bear hazard study was commissioned by BC Parks for the Diamond Head area of Garibaldi Provincial Park. The results identify a number of park facilities where there is a high overlap of human visitor use with fall huckleberry and blueberry feeding for black bears and potentially for grizzly bears. A Geographic Information System (GIS) Decision-Support Model approach was used to map and compare areas of ecological (bear) values and social (park visitor) importance. Methods of reducing human disturbances to bears were also reviewed. Recommendations include: improved food/garbage management, improved public education, a more effective monitoring system, better management of campsites and trails, a speed limit for mountain bikers, clear signage and closer cooperation with other land-use agencies.
