Abstract |
In the summer of 2004, we recorded and collected lichens from snags, downed wood, trees and shrubs found in two old-growth and three 15- to 23-year old stands in the Montane Spruce Biogeoclimatic zone within the Invermere TSA. A third old stand was visited briefly. A total of 545 lichen samples were collected. This report describes the methods and findings to date. A total of 186 species were identified; and additional 19 appear new to science. All substrates sampled (trunks, branches, downed wood, shrub stems) hosted species not found on other substrates. Some species showed clear affinities with younger stands, while some were restricted to old growth. Retained western larch in otherwise clearcut stands may permit earlier colonization by hair lichens (caribou forage). The canopy influence of even relatively small retained trees helps to retain lichen species, otherwise restricted to old growth, on well-decayed wood within harvested stands. One site on karst within with TSA contains a unique lichen flora and should be reserved from harvest. Fred L. Bunnell. | ||||||
