Abstract
The most obvious characteristic of beetle-killed wood is that the sapwood is usually bluestained. This proposal examines wood properties reported to be affected by bluestain. We will determine what effect the beetle carried bluestain fungi have on these wood characteristics. Our objective is to characterize beetle-killed wood by evaluating: basic density and three key strength properties; truss plate fastener holding capability; dimensional stability/tendency of lumber to check; permeability; gluing and finishing properties. Standard tests will be used where possible. Data will be presented in three reports. Additionally a web-based fact sheet written for customers will be produced. Tony Byrne.
