Abstract |
This guide presents site identification and interpretation information for forest ecosystems of the Prince Rupert Forest Region (PRFR) (Figure 1.1). Site identification is based on the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification (BEC) initially developed by Dr. V.J. Krajina at the University of British Columbia and subsequently revised by the B.C. Ministry of Forests. The objectives of this classification are: - to provide a framework for organizing ecological information and management experience about ecosystems; - to promote a better understanding of forest ecosystems and their interrelationships; - to provide resource managers with a common "language" to describe forest sites; and - to improve the users' ability to prescribe and monitor site-specific treatments. This guide results from he recently completed provincial correlation of the BEC system. It replaces previously published site identification field guides (a list is provided in Appendix 1,Section 1). Correlation tables of names of classification units used in previous guides and those used in the 1993 guide are provided in Appendix 2. This guide has two principal goals: - to assist users in describing and identifying forest ecosystems; and - to provide management interpretations to assist users in preparing stand-level forest management prescriptions. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
