Soil disturbance effects of hoe-forwarding on tree growth and site productivity

Abstract
An understanding of the longer-term effects of soil disturbance created by hoe-forwarding on tree growth and site productivity on the Coast of BC is being assessed through re-measurement of experimental trees planted on three established trials. Three sites have now been measured and foliar samples collected: Holberg (15 years in 2006), Jordan River (5 years in 2006) and Woss (15 years in 2007). Results for the Holberg and Jordan River sites were collated and presented in progress reports in 2007; results for Woss have been collected, but remain to be analyzed for the 2007/2008 fiscal year. In the third year of this project (2008/2009) we propose to collate the data for all three sites and prepare extension papers for distribution to field foresters, forest managers, machine operators and allied resource professionals. We also propose to develop guidelines for ground-based (tracked) harvesting systems for Coastal BC. There are no planned deviations in Year 3 from the original proposal
