Abstract |
The Biodiversity Investigation project has been divided into 8 phases. Our overall objectives remain to determine for a selected number of animal and plant species associated with lodgepole pine stands: 1. Habitat use and species richness, particularly in late-successional stands; 2. The impact of MPB infestations on habitat use and species richness; and 3. The impact of retention of pine stands of various sizes and compositions on habitat use and species richness. Our progress to date includes completion of Phase 1. VRI, TRIM, BEC, CanFor's Harvest Plan and mountain pine beetle distribution datasets were used in a GIS exercise to select our initial set of approximately 200 sites. Candidate stands were selected based on the following criteria: 1. Dry warm and moist cool subzones of the Sub-boreal Spruce Zone (SBS). 2. Circum-mesic (submesic to subhybric) moisture regime. 3. Pure (> 80% basal area) and mixed (50-80% basal area) lodgepole pine stands of various sizes. 4. Contiguous stands and WTPS, = 2ha and <2ha.
