Criteria and indicators of joint forest management (Phase 2)

Abstract
British Columbia?s governmental policies call for increased opportunities for First Nations participation in forestry. One future trajectory in meeting this objective, especially during the phase of capacity building and treaty negotiations, will likely be the establishment of increased number of joint forest management regimes. Yet our understanding of the criteria underpinning successful joint management is still underdeveloped. Building on 2002/03 FII research (which reviewed others? research on such criteria, and assessed First Nations materials for indication of criteria), in this phase we will develop a methodology to ascertain and verify locally relevant criteria for successful joint forest management processes and outcomes for the John Prince Research Forest, then apply this methodology to identify the criteria themselves. This research comprises the second phase of a 3-phase project, which will ultimately develop a flexible criteria and indicators framework to direct, monitor and evaluate joint management arrangements throughout BC and beyond.
