Abstract
There have been no deviations from the proposed methods and approaches in the originally approved proposal. We have harvested the mesh bags that had been placed in the field in 2006 and conducted community physiological profiling using Biology plates. We also sampled roots of the spruce saplings and conducted enzyme assays on mycorrhizal tips colonized by different ectomycorrhizal fungi. Molecular analysis of these fungi is currently underway. We also planted the spruce seedlings in preparation for further sampling in the summer and fall of 2008, as outlined in the original proposal. Our objectives continue to be to compare the taxonomic and functional diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi from plots with and without coarse woody debris,13 years after harvest. Our results will allow us to determine whether retention of coarse woody debris increases mycorrhizal biodiversity on ESSF cutblocks
