Abstract
This report is a translation of a Swedish paper on the biological aspects of site preparation. A brief introduction comparing the forestry conditions in British Columbia and Sweden has been added. Problems concerning reforestation are discussed. Factors influencing forest production, and the effect of site preparation on these factors, are presented. These factors include soil temperature, density, and moisture; relative humidity; gas exchange in the soil; and soil nutrients. Causes of mortality include frost heaving, pine weevil infestation, frost damage, and vegetative competition. The effects of site preparation on these casual agents are reviewed. As well, several site preparation methods and planting without site preparation are examined; and stand establishment methods on old fields and peatlands are summarized. Site preparation is relation to natural regeneration, sowing, and different stock types is also presented.
