Abstract
This project is targeted at providing a set of tools and associated methodologies for deriving reforestation standards associated with sustainable forest management objectives. In particular, it is focusing on complex stand types such as intimate mixtures of spruce and aspen in boreal mixedwood stands. The need for this work is highlighted by the consistent difficulty experienced in attempts to apply the current style of standards, originally targeted at near monocultures of conifers, to other stand types. The system being developed starts with a stand or landscape level target for desired future condition, explores a wide range of juvenile stand conditions that are either expected or not expected to achieve that target in the future, and explores potential survey systems and acceptability thresholds for consistently identifying those juvenile stands having desirable attributes. This is the second year of a potentially 3 year project that will be completed by Craig Farnden RPF. Craig is a forester with 20 years of experience in silviculture and growth & yield. He has worked extensively with several growth & yield models, and has developed several useful G&Y-based decision support tools for silviculturists. This work is being undertaken as part of his PhD dissertation at UBC under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Larson. It is intended that regular contact be maintained throughout this project with staff in the MoF?s Forest Practices Branch (i.e. Lorne Bedford, John McClarnon and Allan Powelson) and Canfor staff in the Peace region (Jeff Beale and Wes Neumeier).
