Abstract
1. Outline Operability lines are used to describe the presence or absence of physical barriers or limitations to harvesting, logging methods and the merchantability of stands. 2. Methodology This project will utilize the methodology developed in the Harvest Method Mapping (HMM) Pilot Project, Bulkley Forest District, signed by Glen Buhr. This is a methodology that queries attributes available in the forest inventory data to classify polygons. It is based on physical and economic feasibility for harvest. Operability polygons are assigned primary ?Harvest method? and secondary ?Stand Quality? Codes using the ARC/INFO algorithms developed utilizing the criteria listed in below. a) Codes Primary ?Harvest Method? Codes Secondary ?Harvest Method? Codes G ? Ground S ? Sawlog Stands C- Cable M ? Marginal Stands H ? Helicopter P ? Pulplog stands I ? Inaccessible (forested) D ? Deciduous leading L ? Sites of low productivity T ? Sites with density problems b) Parameters The Technical Working Group of the Kalum SFMP Steering Committee will define parameters specific to the Kalum for the primary and secondary codes. One primary and one secondary code will be assigned to each polygon. The following are examples of variables that will contribute to the definition of parameters: low, poor, medium and good sites, slope categories for ground, cable and helicopter yarding, minimum harvest age and minimum diameter. c) Net Downs Operability code combinations will be identified as either contributing to the operable landbase or being inoperable. Those defined as inoperable will have a percent reduction factor (0 to 100 %) assigned. d) Licensee Review Once completed, licensees operating in the Kalum will review draft maps. Refinements as required, will be made to the operability lines
