Abstract
Significant findings based on 20 field experiments and numerous laboratory studies in 2003-4 include: efficacy of a 3-component non-host volatile blend in deterring attack by the mountain pine beetle; efficacy at 10 and 15 m centres of the 3-component blend in combination with verbenone in a push pull tactic with pheromone-baited trees; demonstration of comparable efficacy of PheroTech and Biota baits for the mountain pine beetle; lack of significant protection of logs from ambrosia attack with MCH; discovery of uv reflectance by paper birch bark; final efficacy testing of a new trap for large woodborers leading to the first sales of the trap by PheroTech in 2004; characterisation of species-specific fungal complexes in four native species of ambrosia beetles; verification of resistance to the poplar and willow borer in two hybrid poplar clones; and further finding of coniferophagous bark beetle pheromones in the bark of angiosperm trees. One PhD and one Master of Pest Management student successfully defended their theses. Publications and communications included: 11 papers in refereed journals and 7 more in press; 2 non-refereed papers; and 7 presentations at scientific and professional meetings. Thirty two papers in refereed journals based on accumulated data are yet to be submitted. John H. Borden.
