Abstract |
To meet their certification obligations, Iisaak Forest Resources Ltd. (Iisaak) hired Madrone Environmental Services Ltd. (Madrone) to complete a High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) Assessment for its managed forest land in Clayoquot Sound. This assessment is required under Principle 9 of the Forest Stewardship Council ? BC Standards (FSC-BC, 2005). A previous HCVF assessment was completed for Clayoquot Sound by Rachel Holt, R.P.Bio. and Greg Utzig, P.Ag. in March 2007. Holt & Utzig (2007) concluded that the entire area of Clayoquot Sound constituted an HCVF. They determined that many of Iisaak?s strategies, goals, protocols, and practice standards were at a level sufficient to maintain the values identified in the assessment, but that some were insufficient or incomplete. This assessment builds on their work with the completion of a series of more detailed HCVF analyses, including some recommendations for completion by Holt & Utzig (2007). Our work focuses on questions raised through the FSC-BC Audit, which indicated that the Holt & Utzig HCVF assessment report was not complete and that it had not yet addressed some basic questions regarding Principle 9 (Moore and Dunsworth, 2009). Completion of this HCVF Assessment required additional public consultation from Stakeholders, Rights holders, First Nations and any directly affected persons in accordance with the FSC-BC standards. This consultation process was designed to solicit any conservation values and any indicators they perceive as relevant to forest management in Clayoquot Sound. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
