Abstract
The year 2006 was the sixth year of nutrient addition to enhance primary production in the Nimpkish River. Six drip stations each added a 2:1 mixture of ammonium polyphosphate (10-34-0) and ammonium nitrate (28-0-0). The maximum target addition was 2.5 µg/L of phosphorus and 3.85 µg/L nitrogen. The total load of 7,920 L was applied over 100 days to the following sites: Cain Creek 760 L, Davie River at Croman bridge crossing 1,325 L, Eleaner Road 950 L, Duncan Pool 1,135 L, Powerline Crossing 2,270 L and Lower Nimpkish- Branch 12 1,480 L. Tanks were checked and calibrated approximately once a week from June to early September, 2006. Water samples were collected from treated and control reaches on June 27, August 1 and August 28, 2006 and sent to the Pacific Environmental Science Centre for analysis. Observations indicated slower algae growth in June possibly due to colder water and moderate to excellent growth within treatment reaches at the end of July and August. Streamflow was unusually low in August and September. prepared by Loreta Hansen and Harlan Wright.
