Abstract |
The effectiveness of riparian management practices, in particular along small streams, has not been adequately tested. In our replicated, before-after control-impact study of 13 small streams we are testing the effect of different levels of riparian reserves (controls, 30 m buffers, 10 m buffers, clearcuts) for protecting stream and riparian ecosystem components and processes. We also propose to add an additional partial harvesting along three new streams (compared to three original controls). In each case a suite of chemical, physical, and biological measures are used to compare the impacts of management. The stream and riparian system continues to diverge from controls even 2 years post-harvesting. We will study the continuing changes, the eventual recovery dynamics, and the effects of partial harvesting trials along these small streams and their riparian areas. John S.
