BC Conservation Data Centre: Conservation Status Report

Valvata tricarinata
Threeridge Valvata

Scientific Name: Valvata tricarinata
English Name: Threeridge Valvata

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S1S2
Date Status Assigned: April 30, 2015
Date Last Reviewed: April 20, 2015
Reasons: There are only 3 locations where this species has been found extant since 1969 (Wasa Lake, Kootenay Lake (at Kuskonook) and Columbia River, near Trail).

Range
Range Extent: EF = 5,000-200,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: Until 2014, only 2 records were known (both in Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) from Kootenay Lake and a pond near the shore of Kootenay Lake in 1969) in collection databases (Lepitzki 2013). In 2014, it was found at Wasa Lake and the Columbia R. near Trail (Lepitzki and Lepitzki 2014) and Kootenay Lake (at Kuskonook) (Klinkenberg 2013; I. Gardiner, pers. comm. 2015). Clarke's (1981) range map includes only a sliver of BC along the border with Alberta beginning north of Jasper. This area does not include Kootenay Lake. Lee (2000) cites Frest (1997) as suggested it is probably a rare species in southern BC. She also cites Frest and Johannes (1995) as stating V. tricarinata is quite rare and all western North American occurences are strongly disjunct but that statement is not in the article - perhaps it is in Frest (1997).
Area of Occupancy (km2): BC = 2-5

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: AC = 1 - 80
Comments: 2 historical records from Kootenay Lake; in 2014, this species was found at Wasa Lake and the Columbia River near Trail (Lepitzki and Lepitzki 2014) and Kootenay Lake (at Kuskonook) (Klinkenberg 2013; I. Gardiner, pers. comm. 2015) (http://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/efauna/Atlas/Atlas.aspx?sciname=Valvata%20tricarinata).
