BC Conservation Data Centre: Conservation Status Report

Valvata humeralis
Glossy Valvata

Scientific Name: Valvata humeralis
English Name: Glossy Valvata

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S1S3
Date Status Assigned: April 30, 2015
Date Last Reviewed: April 20, 2015
Reasons: This species had not been recorded since 1883; however, it has recently (2012/2013) been identified from the Flathead in south east BC (Lepitzki, pers. comm. 2014). There are likely more locations, as it occurs in broad habitat types. Inventory is needed to help to refine the rank (Gelling, L. pers. comm. 2015).

Range
Range Extent: E = 5,000-20,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: Collected from one site in the Flathead River valley during the 2012 Bioblitz (Lepitzki 2013); they were also collected from the same site in 2013 (Lepitzki and Lepitzki 2013 unpubl. data). Clarke (1981) does not include this species but Burch (1989) does and suggests its distribution is from Montana south to Colorado and west to BC and California. Taylor (1981) also states its range includes southern BC but that its northern and eastern limits are uncertain. Lee (2000) lists one record in CMN from Upper Columbia Lake (CMNML-002041) that was collected by J.B. Tyrrell on 13 September 1883 that was identified by W.H. Heard as being this species.

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: AC = 1 - 80
Comments: Only 1 possible voucher specimen from 1883 (Upper Columbia Lake) but new specimens from one site collected in 2012 and 2013 (Lepitzki, D. pers. comm. 2014).
